Art & Design Overview and Skills

Art should provide children with opportunities to express their creativity. At Telscombe Cliffs Community Primary School, we encourage children to develop key skills in their sketchbooks. This allows the children to observe changes in their work over time, and make reflections. In KS2, children are encouraged to record their reflections in written format. Once a child has had the opportunity to develop a specific skill, they will then create a final piece.

At Telscombe Cliffs, we follow the National Curriculum for Art and Design, focusing on painting, drawing, and 3D sculptures. We develop skills in these areas through focusing on:

Creativity – Encouraging pupils to express themselves through a variety of mediums.

Techniques – Creating art in different ways and using different materials.

Observing – Developing children’s ability to see the world, and pay close attention to what is in front of them.

Knowledge – Providing a deeper understanding of techniques used by artists.

Evaluation – Encouraging children to make choices about their work, and reflecting as they go.
